compostable sequins made out of natural dye and algae based material

Long description

„An ocean full of opportunities“ is a research project about the usage of different types of algae and algae based products to create a sustainable, compostable plastic alternative. The complete biodegradable biopolymer is mainly made from Agar Agar, an algae based gelatin substitute. It can be produced in a variety of shades, structures and looks. The biopolymer is dyed with natural dyed like carmine, turmeric and algae dyes such as astaxanthin and phycocyanin. The sequins is one example of this experimental approach on finding sustainable options for fashion.

The material itself can be recycled and turned into a new batch of algae based biopolymer. This reduces waste within the production process to a minimum and turns it into a highly cost and material efficient product.

We produce sequins out of the biopolymer to provide a natural alternative for fashion and textile designers and manufacturers to create a flamboyant look without the necessity to use plastic sequins. It can be stitched on easily like any other sequins and taken off and recycled after the life cycle of the garment ends.
